Specialty Programs:
The
Child Program:
-
Ages 5-11;
-
Males and females;
-
Emotionally disturbed children with
psychiatric illness;
-
The Child Program provides psychiatrically
and medically managed residential treatment for emotionally disturbed youth
and is located on the Kempsville Campus in Norfolk, Virginia. The
Child Program is designed to meet the developmental needs of the young
child and those of latency age who require a high degree of nurturing, adult
supervision and role modeling with opportunities to learn through
play. Therapists focus on decreasing aggression and improving impulse
control and frustration tolerance within the resident's familial and peer
relationships. Behavior management for child residents is monitored
via a point and level system through which increasing responsibility is
demonstrated and extra privileges are earned. Appropriate educational
services are also provided.
-
We use a short-term stabilization approach
that is an important program component. Critical to the success of
this intensive services plan is the aftercare support services and providers
who actively participate in the resident's treatment planning, treatment,
and discharge planning.
-
The Child Program also offers a
comprehensive track for sexually reactive children who require a
multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment to help them overcome their
sexual trauma and disruptions in their development.
The Adolescent Program:
-
Ages 12-18;
-
Males and females;
-
Emotionally disturbed youth with diagnosis
of psychiatric illness;
-
This comprehensive mental health program
provides psychiatrically and medically managed residential treatment for
emotionally disturbed youth and is located on the Kempsville Campus in
Norfolk, Virginia. Residents in The Adolescent Program participate in
a comprehensive range of therapies, academics, and prescribed therapeutic
activities including individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy,
social skills groups, and leisure skills groups.
-
A chemical dependency treatment track for
dually diagnosed adolescents (mental health/substance abuse) is available
with this program.
-
An important component of the program is
our Short-Term Stabilization approach. Requirements for the
Short-Term Stabilization approach include 1) face-to-face family treatment
on a weekly or bimonthly basis, supplemented by telephone sessions on off
weeks; 2) identification of an aftercare mental health provider to
facilitate family treatment in the resident's home community and participate
in telephone family treatment sessions; 3) more frequent therapeutic leaves
of absence; 4) the availability and accessibility of home-based or other
wraparound services as recommended in the Aftercare Plan by The Pines
Treatment Team; and 5) the availability and accessibility of recommended
post-discharge educational services. Residents accepted for Short-Term
Stabilization will be continuously assessed for appropriateness as
participants of the program.
Diagnoses Treated: Depressive
disorders, trauma disorders, bi-polar disorder, ADHD, schizoaffective disorder,
substance abuse, oppositional and aggressive behavior, conduct disorder,
sexually reactive (The Child Program only)

The New Start Center for Recovery is a 20-bed, free-standing
unit at Intermountain Hospital in Boise, Idaho. This program is
focused on the assessed needs of adult patients who are seeking treatment for
co-occurring mental health and drug or alcohol issues.
New Start is designed with the intensity of in-patient
treatment. The program integrates psychiatric, medical, and nursing care
with a balanced, flexible approach to the treatment of substance abuse. A
variety of service components are offered as part of the recovery process.
Treatment is initiated with the medical and psychiatric
stabilization of the patient in a safe and supportive environment. This
will occur for some individuals on the Adult Psych unit, depending on need.
Following this 2-5 day detox and evaluation, the patient begins the New Start
Program.
The focus of treatment is ongoing psychiatric care with an
additional strong emphasis on the process of recovery - all provided on an
independent, completely remodeled unit with a supportive, expertly trained, and
highly qualified staff.
Treatment is grounded in the traditional and time proven 12 step
philosophy, but will also contain components of psycho-educational classes,
cognitive-behavioral therapies, interactive occupational and recreational
therapies, family counseling and support, relapse prevention, processing shame,
guilt and blame, and a thorough awareness of the impact of co-dependent
behaviors. The program is provided with the hope of helping individuals
gain and maintain their sobriety and mental stability in the lifelong context of
health and balance.
